GBC Local Missions: Doing a good deed, sharing a good word

Hunger

Gayton Baptist Food Pantry
Gayton Baptist Church operates a free food pantry to help our neighbors in need. The pantry is stocked with packaged and canned non-perishable food and is open to anyone. Income information is not required, and visits to the pantry are kept confidential. More info for clients and volunteers here.

Meals on Wheels
Through the Meals on Wheels program, several GBC members deliver balanced, nutritious meals to 7-9 elderly or disabled individuals each month. Our hope is to add drivers so GBC can completely staff a route.

Homelessness

Freedom House
GBC has been faithfully providing servers to the Freedom House’s Conrad Center feeding program for years now. We also bring leftover food from Wednesday night suppers. Servers and drivers are always needed. This past Christmas, we participated for the first time in Freedom House’s “Giving Tree” program, supplying bags and bags of gifts for the homeless. More on the Freedom House here.

Prison Ministry

The Prison Ministry at GBC has just started up. We have a bible/devotional book drive and a toiletry drive under our belts, as well as our first visit to Greenville prison. Currently, the most pressing need from Greenville is for hardback or leather-bound Bibles (preferably with cross-references) in the following translations: ESV, NCV, and NKJV. We also have a need for large-print Bibles in any translation except KJV.

Construction & Home Repairs

Toolbox Ministry
Gayton has a long history of sending teams on construction/repair missions around town and around the country. Our next big project will be in the southside of Richmond where we’ve sponsored one of the 40+ houses that Rebuilding Together will repair on April 24th. In addition to large projects, Toolbox Ministry maintains a list of volunteers ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in our church or local community. We are currently accepting donations of tools as well as money we’ll put toward a truck.

Gayton Gives Back

In Spring 2009, GBC held it’s first annual Gayton Gives Back event. We cleaned up our neighborhood schools, nursing homes, and a local free preschool. We need planners and project leaders for this event each year.

Service Fair

In November 2009, GBC held it’s first Service Fair. We had a bunch of GBC and other local volunteer organizations come explain how we can help. In addition to those mentioned above, here are a few organizations that would love to hear from new volunteers:

We’d like this to be an annual event, and need organizers.

How do you help the “least of these?” Would other GBCers be interested? Tell us what you’re up to and how we can help! E-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or see Raj Prasad.
